If your hair is quite dark and you want to go just a little lighter, then you wont have to bleach, you can just use medium brown ash color. If you want to go lighter than that, it will cause significantly more damage because you'll have to bleach, which may cause horrible breakage because black hair can be a bit brittle after chemical services.
