Can life threatening experiences, or similar events cause a person to get streaks of white in their

Although I have not seen any research data confirming the causal relationship between stress, ACTH, and hair whitening, it is not difficult for one to speculate that under chronic stress, the body may respond to the 閳ユ笩tress閳?by increasing secretion of ACTH. This increased ACTH level,

if sustained for a prolonged period, may somehow over-stimulate the melanocytes in the hair bulb, and disrupt the normal coupling of follicular melanogenesis and hair growth cycle. This might then contribute to the age-related, genetically regulated exhaustion of the pigmentary potential of each individual hair follicle and subsequently resulting in hair whitening.

Yeah stress can be a reason why... and if you are colouring your hair often..

Yes. during the Vietnam war it happened to many people who were on the ground during a b-52 strike !

no

I've heard certain trauma can cause streaks of hair with no pigment but I think even though its controversial, its scientifically unfounded. I know a kid who has one swatch of hair with no pigment, his parents alternately call it a birth mark and a result of birth trauma.

I agree with seafairy. That's a really good explanation.

I once worked with a fellow who was in his mid 30's who was in Vietnam. Though he never talked about his combat experiences, he did mention one big battle he was in. I remember reading about that battle in Time Magazine, and read a book about where that battle was talked about. And that was a really bad experience. That fellow's hair was as white as snow.

I'm was a hairdresser by trade for many years. We were told that it was impossible for this to happen - as it is the melonocytes which pack up producing melanin that causes the hair to turn white (no such thing as grey). I've heard many people say that they know people who went 'grey overnight' but I don't know if it proven to be possible yet.

My eyebrows are now going 'white', the irony is, when I pluck them they are dark at the ends and white near the roots (no, I don't mean the part that is in the follicle). What I'm trying to say is, you can see a change in colour taking place gradually!
